August 19, 2011
A widow of a Utah veteran has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Hospital system, after she claims doctors were negligent in the treatment of her husband. Ksl.com reports the man was disabled after a tour of duty in Baghdad and was living in Tooele, Utah, working for the Tooele Army Depot Fire Unit.
The man tripped and fell over some of his children’s toys in his home, prompting a visit to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken leg. He was kept overnight and sent home the next day with painkillers and crutches. The man returned to the hospital three days later after having difficulties with the crutches and experiencing difficulty breathing. Again, he was kept overnight and was sent home the next day on crutches and with painkillers. Two days later, the veteran was dead at the age of 32 form what toxicology and autopsy reports said amounted to a toxic cocktail of prescription medications he had been given and a blood clot in his lung resulting from the broken leg.
The lawsuit claims doctors did not act in a timely manner to properly care or the man and were negligent in their treatment.
