Product Liability: Similac® Formula Recall

Similac® Baby Formula  Recall

The manufacturer of Similac baby foods is recalling up to 5 million containers of its infant  formula due to the risk of possible insect contamination.

According to the manufacturer, "An internal quality review detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle. There is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted."

What Similac Baby Formula Products Have Been Recalled?

The recall affects all rectangular plastic tubs of powdered Similac and some 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, and 12.9-ounce cans. The complete 38-page list of all potentially affected products can be found here.

How High Is the Risk of Contamination?

The manufacturer claims internal tests showed 99.8% of the lots were contamination-free.

What Signs Should I Look For?

If your baby ingested contaminated formula, the main symptom to look for is an irritated gastrointestinal tract. This usually presents as the baby refusing to eat because of internal discomfort, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends you take your baby to a physician if he or she refuses to eat after ingesting recalled Similac formula.
