Fosamax®- Medical Alert
The American Dental Association is reporting that users of FOSAMAX are at increased risk for the development of Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) or bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis (BON), more commonly referred to as "DEAD JAW." FOSAMAX is prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis and may sometimes be prescribed to patients with cancer.
Symptoms of DEAD JAW include the following:
- Pain, swelling, or infection of the gums or jaw;
- Gums that do not heal;
- Loose teeth;
- Numbness or a feeling of heaviness of the jaw;
- Drainage; and
- Exposed bone
